Industrial Variable Frequency Screw Air Compressor – Product Documentation

I. Product Introduction

The industrial variable frequency screw air compressor is a high‑capacity compressed air source that combines variable frequency drive (VFD) technology with screw compression principles. It is an upgraded version of the conventional fixed‑speed screw compressor, designed to provide air supply in industrial settings. Its core principle is to adjust the motor speed via a frequency inverter in real time, matching air output to actual demand. This eliminates the energy waste caused by the traditional “load‑idle” switching of fixed‑speed compressors.

The equipment is widely used in machinery manufacturing, electronics, chemical, food & beverage, pharmaceutical, textile, automotive, shipbuilding, precision electronics, metallurgy, petrochemical, and many other industries. Thanks to its outstanding energy efficiency, stable operation, low noise, and high reliability, the variable frequency screw compressor is gradually replacing traditional fixed‑speed models as the preferred solution for industrial compressed air systems.

II. Product Description

1. Core Structure & Operating Principle

The industrial variable frequency screw air compressor mainly consists of the screw air end, variable‑frequency motor, oil‑gas separator, cooling system, and intelligent control system. Its working principle is based on the meshing motion of two screw rotors. As the motor drives the screw air end, air is drawn into the rotor chamber through the intake filter. With the rotation of the screws, the air is progressively compressed within the chambers formed by the screw teeth. During compression, an oil injection system sprays lubricating oil into the compression cavity to provide lubrication, cooling, and sealing. The oil‑air mixture then enters the oil‑gas separator, where clean compressed air is discharged after passing through the after‑cooler.

The VFD technology works as follows: the control system continuously monitors the discharge pressure and adjusts the motor frequency and speed according to the actual air demand, delivering on‑demand production. When the demand decreases, the motor slows down and power consumption drops accordingly; when demand increases, the motor speeds up rapidly to ensure sufficient compressed air supply in a timely manner.

2. Key Technical Features

  • Screw Air End: High‑precision screw rotors with optimised profiles; some models are equipped with patented SAP screw profiles (e.g., Atlas Copco) and SKF high‑precision bearings for efficient compression and long service life.

  • Drive System: Option of IE5 ultra‑high‑efficiency permanent magnet motor with a high‑performance VFD, meeting China’s Tier‑1 energy efficiency standard; or a dedicated high‑efficiency VFD motor with high ingress protection against dust and moisture.

  • Intelligent Control: Colour touch‑screen HMI with RS485 communication, supporting remote monitoring, fault pre‑alarm, and data logging.

  • Cooling System: Air‑cooled or water‑cooled options, with oversized coolers that allow normal operation even in ambient temperatures up to 46°C.

  • Oil‑Air Separation: High‑precision full‑flow spin‑on oil filters, with a three‑stage separation (centrifugal, gravity, and filter element) achieving oil carry‑over as low as 1–3 ppm.

3. Typical Technical Parameters

Parameter Typical Range
Power 7.5 kW – 355 kW
Discharge Pressure 0.7 – 1.3 MPa
Air Flow Capacity 0.3 – 33.0 m³/min
Energy Efficiency Class China Tier‑1

III. Product Advantages

1. Outstanding Energy Savings

The variable frequency screw compressor automatically adjusts motor speed to match actual air consumption, delivering precise output. Compared to traditional fixed‑speed compressors, energy savings can exceed 30%. Some premium permanent‑magnet VFD models achieve 30‑40% savings over standard fixed‑speed units. The design eliminates energy waste from constant‑speed operation and unnecessary load‑idle transitions, effectively reducing long‑term electricity costs.

2. Stable Discharge Pressure

Using VFD stepless speed regulation and PID closed‑loop control, the compressor offers smooth starting and rapid response. Even under fluctuating air demand, it quickly stabilises pressure within ±0.1 bar, ensuring constant pressure supply.

3. Soft Start & Low Inrush Current

VFD starting is smoother than traditional “soft starters” and completely avoids current spikes. Starting current is less than twice the rated current, placing no shock on the power grid and extending motor life.

4. Low Noise Operation

Sound‑absorbing materials, optimised structural design, and vibration‑damping components effectively reduce operating noise. Low‑speed operation further lowers noise levels, providing a quieter working environment for operators.

5. Extended Equipment Life & Reduced Maintenance

VFD control reduces mechanical shock, and the oil injection system minimises wear, significantly lowering failure rates. Additionally, robust design and longer maintenance intervals reduce downtime.

6. Intelligent Management

The built‑in intelligent control system supports remote monitoring of multiple compressors, sending alerts and initiating protective actions when anomalies occur. The colour touch‑screen HMI offers user‑friendly operation, facilitating preventive maintenance and system management.

7. Wide Environmental Adaptability

The equipment operates reliably in ambient temperatures from ‑15°C to 50°C. The oversized cooling system allows normal operation even at 46°C. It is also suitable for dusty, high‑temperature, or other harsh industrial conditions.
